In our Silver Portrait Store, we – Barend van Herpe and Annemarie van der Heijden – create handcrafted Wet Plate Collodion Tintype and Black Glass Ambrotype portraits. It is our aim to resurrect the (almost) lost art of wet plate portrait photography, updating and expanding on the 19th century techniques.
To create a timeless portrait, traditional skills in camera setup, lighting, timing and chemistry are vital. For each unique, one-off portrait we prepare an aluminium or black glass plate with a light sensitive layer. This wet plate is exposed in a large format camera obscura. After exposure, we invite you into the darkroom to witness first-hand the developing process in all its stages. You will receive the original plate-with-portrait. As an additional service, we offer professional digital scans, wooden frames and large format inkjet prints on fine art paper.
As our clients testify, sitting for a traditional tintype portrait is a totally different experience from the film or digital age. This old magic takes you into a timeless zone, far beyond the hustle and bustle of everyday life – a place where you can see more of yourself or your loved ones.
